However, reading Andrew Davis's Town Inc. has restored my enthusiasm for city planning and aroused a desire for re-involvement. This is a powerful book because, unlike the majority of city planning books--which are written for city planners for city planners--Town Inc. is a jargon-free book any citizen can read and emerge with a desire to become involved.
Written by veteran content marketer Andrew Davis, Town Inc. is a practical manifesto for change communicated as a series of stories, not statistics. The emphasis is on stories of individual actions and achievements based on a simple 3-step process that is quantified by links to statistics which are available, if desired.
Town Inc's stories contrast the shockingly different positive and negative outcomes of closely-matched city-pairs who experienced similar challenges, but--through Andrew's 3-step process--have managed to emerge as economically vibrant, healthy, and desirable places to live.
What makes Town Inc a catalyst for action is that the turning points, or pivots, were organically driven, through the proactive vision and actions of business owners working to create win-win situations for their businesses and their towns. Andrew has identified a 3-step driver of civic growth with a proven record of success, rather than, as he puts it, "pork-barrel politics," multi-year research grants, endless tax breaks, or laisse-faire pessimism.
I've long been a fan of well-written, well-produced short books that leave you with a feeling that you can make a positive difference or contribute to positive change. Town Inc. is an excellent example of the genre. If you love your town, read it, reflect on your town's history, and then "Stake Your Claim." All you really have to do is share Town Inc. with others who care about your town's future, and--together--alert your local business leaders to the potential benefits of implementing similar win-win scenarios in your town.
He tells the stories without checking his facts; he uses falsified anecdotes to prove his point.
The idea behind the book is good, but I would prefer that the ideas were not backed solely by his opinions.
He is writing more to entertain than to educate.
As a City Administrator myself I would not recommend this book to my staff or to any fellow administrators.
Economic development experts normally recommend diversification for a city’s economy. They caution against relying on a single industry, let alone highlighting the success of a single company, to rebuild a town.
But they’re wrong.
In Andrew Davis fascinating book, he takes you on a road trip around the country and shows how a growing number of towns have instead focused on a specific niche, the genesis of which might have come from just one company. That niche then draws other complementary (and competitive) firms, a talent pool, a rich supply chain and higher than average incomes for the residents.
In the book, he explains in very clear detail how successful towns have been able to find their unique and relevant differentiator, and how they enlisted the enthusiastic support of the businesses and the community at large. The trick is to stake a unique claim that will be easy for local visionaries, business owners, and citizens to embrace and to market across the country and around the world.
When you finish reading “Town Inc.” you’ll know how to go about making your town famous and prosperous.

As at least one other reviewer mentioned, this is the type of book that simply pushes you to expand your thinking and see the world from a different perspective. Like many, I tend to get lost in the details a bit too much; Andrew's approach to saving Smalltown America forced me to shift and to grow and to open up to new possibilities as my perspective broadened. It showed me that anyone with some vision, creativity and passion for their town really can step up to the plate and change everything about the economic climate. I really believe that after reading this book, and I appreciate its message on many levels...including as an entrepreneur.
